Reflection Questions - Article 1

5. Using the simulation, describe what happens to groundwater when pumping is lower or

equal to the rate of infiltration.

6. Using the simulation, describe what happens to the stream and water table as the

number of pumps running is increased.

7. How can water needs be met if the rate of infiltration is lower than the rate of pumping?

8. In the simulation, what happened to the stream as the water table dropped? What will

happen to the groundwater if a pollutant is added to the stream?

9. Predict long-term changes to the surface landscape of the area if too much water is

drawn from the ground and the water table drops further.

If the water extracted from ground water through pumping is equal to the rate of infiltration so the water table maintain the level of ground water.

    Explanation:

If the water extracted from ground water is equal to the rate of infiltration so the water table maintain the level of ground water. But if more water is extracted from ground water and very low amount of water infiltrate in the soil so the level of water table goes downward. We have to slow down the rate of pumping in order to level the infiltration rate. Water was pulled out of the stream back into the groundwater as the water table dropped. If pollutants are added to the stream it will also contaminate the ground water because stream water infiltrate in the soil and maintain the level of ground water. If too much water is drawn from the ground and the water table drops further so the requirement of the people does not fulfilled and the people migrate from these areas and also agriculture is impossible in this area because plants need water for growing.
