'Natural selection' was the term used by Charles Darwin to explain such observations. He explained that species developed variations as a result of their encounter with the external environment. Those with variations that gave them best evolutionary advantage survived as a result and those without them lost the battle for survival. This is how essential traits are preserved in species.
