Buffy stayed out in the sun too long Saturday. She woke up Sunday morning and most of the skin on her body was red, painful, and slightly swollen. By Monday, she was a little better and no blisters had appeared, but she played it safe and went to the doctor. Buffy's doctor explained that the sun had caused damage only to the epidermis and advised her to use sunscreen from now on. What type of burn did Buffy sustain (first, second, or third degree) ?

Buffy sustained a first degree burn

    Explanation:

The skin is made up of 3 layers namely the epidermis (outer), dermis (middle) and hypodermis (inner). Degrees of burns are therefore named based on the severity of damage to the layers of the skin

First degree burn affects the epidermis and is characterized by red, painful skin with no blisters

Second degree burn affects the epidermis and the dermis and is characterized by red, swollen skin with blisters and some thickening of the skin

Third degree burns are widespread and appear white and leathery
