Glycogen is the major reserve food in animal cells. It is stored in the liver and muscle of animals.
Glycogen is highly branched polysaccharide since it consists of many glucose units with α-1, 4-glycosidic linkage. When in need of energy the body stimulates the breakdown of glycogen to raise glucose levels for energy supply.
