The NEPA short form of the National Environmental Policy Act came into force on 1st January 1970. NEPA needs the federal agencies to evaluate the environmental effects of their suggested actions before making any kind of judgments. The array of activities that comes under NEPA is wide and comprises:

    1. Adopting federal land management activities,

    2. Making decisions on permit applications, and

    3. Constructing highways and other publicly-owned facilities.

With the application of NEPA, the agencies access the environmental and associated economic and social influences of their suggested actions.
