A zygote is formed during the process of fertilization, when a cell from the male parent combine with a cell from the female parent. A zygote is a diploid cell, this implies that, it is made up of 46 chromosomes; the chromosomes are obtained from the parents, each of them donate 23 chromosomes. The parent chromosomes are described as haploid.

The zygote has to undergo series of cell division in order to develop. The fertilized egg (zygote) started out as a single cell and within the next four days it will undergo cell division via mitosis to form a structure called morulla.

Morulla is made up of 16 cells and is spherical in shape. The morula become implanted at the uterus and continue to develop to form blastocysts. The blastocysts is made up of more than 100 cells.

Through the process of meiosis, new DNAs that are distinctively different from that of the parents are formed in the zygote. The chromosomes are made up of units called genes. The genes in the zygote (obtained from the parents) will be rearranged in such a way that they will produce various traits that are different from those of the parents, thus, the baby that will be born will have unique characteristics that are different from the parents'.

A zygote is formed when two gametes (female egg and male sperm) are fertilized. The zygote contains genetic material (DNA) from both mother and father. The DNA in the zygote carry hereditary information, this information is carried in the 22 pairs of chromosomes, plus an XY or XX chromosome inside the zygote.
