What are the long-term effects of a major oil spill?

A lot of plants could die for good causing some animals not to be able to live in the same area. Specific animal species will be decreasing in their normal habitat and places will not be safe for human contacts. Cleanup workers will have a hard time trying fix such a mess, things will go unbalanced.
