How are the phosphates incorporated into the organic molecules in aquatic plants and animals?

    The main part of the phosphorus cycle is occurring between the soil, plants and animals. It is usually found in soil in the form of rocks, minerals and sediments.

    However, when rocks weather and dissolve, the phosphorus is released into the soil, from where it can be transferred to rivers, seas and oceans by the means of surface runoffs. This is suggested to be the main mean of phosphorus entering the ocean.

    Once in the ocean, phosphorus, which is highly toxic in elementary state, reacts with water giving phosphates, which get incorporated into algae and plankton or ocean plants (from the phosphates in the ocean ground). In their organisms, phisohates become part of complex compounds essential for life. Since these organisms are in the bottom of the food chain, they serve as food for larger ocean animals (shells, crabs, various fish) thus being transferred and incorporated into their organisms.
