What is the result of digestion of starch in the pig?

    Digestion in the mouth of the pig is negligible. Intake of dry feed induces secretion of saliva, containing water, mucus and alpha-amylase. Any sugar and starch digestion is predominantly due to fermentation. This degradation results in formation of volatile fatty acids and lactic acid.
