Annotation of the human genome sequence reveals a discrepancy between the number of protein-coding genes and the number of predicted proteins actually expressed by the genome. Proteomic analysis indicates that human cells are capable of synthesizing more than 100,000 different proteins and perhaps three times this number. What is the discrepancy, and how can it be reconciled?

    Human Genome project is the international project that main aim to sequence the human DNA base pairs. The total number of gene and protein product are also inferred by human genome project.

    The result of proteomic analysis and human genome sequence is different. This is because the protein production of gene around 20, 000 might occur due to post translation modification and alternative splicing. This can be reconciled as DNA segment is read in two opposite directions and read in different ways.
