These substances also get into the cell by the process of active transport. It is the process by which substances move across the cell membrane against a concentration gradient.

    Active transport takes place through carriers located in the membrane. Breakdown of ATP to ADP provides the energy necessary to drive the process.

    The carrier binds the molecule or ion to be transported on one side of the membrane and takes it to the other side.
