Certain parasites, such as intestinal tapeworms, cannot survive outside of the host. why are they still considered alive?

While intestinal tapeworms and certain other parasites can't survive outside of the host, they are still considered alive because their segments or eggs can survive for weeks in the environment, remaining viable enough to infect a new (and unfortunate) host.
