Decantation is the act of carefully pouring off the liquid without disturbing the substance you're trying to collect and analyze. Whereas extraction is the action of taking something out, usually prominent in dissections where you take something out of the subject. However, in some cases, these two words are interchangeable and it would depend on your teacher's instructions.
