The stomach is lined by a mucus layer resistant to acid degradation and this is facilitated by the production of protective prostaglandins in the stomach.

The stomach does not physiologically push acid out to during peristalsis as this can be a pathologic process that can cause damage to the esophagus and cause Barrett's esophagus and eventually adenocarcinoma. The stomach does not produce any bacteria and bicarbonate.
