Subduction is a result of Plate tectonics. All the tectonic plates are moving towards or away from one another because of this reason if two plates are moving towards one another one of the plates (the heavier plate) moves under the other plate causing the plate to move under it into the mantle where increased temperature causes it to melt and become part of the magma underneath
