Billions of years ago, algae, or more specifically Cyanobacteria, grew and took in thr C02 in our air and turned it into oxygen. This led to the Great Oxygenation Event where a significant amount of oxygen was added into our atmosphere, thus increasing the earth atmospheric oxygen.
