The steps or rungs of the DNA molecule are composed of respective nitrogenous bases, complementary base pairing by forming respective hydrogen bonds with other nitrogenous bases of the other nucleotides that make up the second polynucleotide strand of DNA. The sides of the DNA molecule are composed of sugar and phosphate making up the sugar phosphate backbone.
