In vitro is a procedure that is performed not in a living organism but in a controlled environment, like a test tube or Petri dish.

Explanation; In vitro refers to the technique of performing a given procedure in a controlled environment outside of a living organism. In vivo on the other hand refers to experimentation using a whole, living organism as opposed to a partial or dead organism. Many experiments in cellular biology may be conducted outside living organisms, that is in the lab. Using in vitro is disadvantageous as cells may fail to replicate the same cellular conditions of an organisms especially with bacteria.
