How does food provide a source of energy for living things?

Neutrons in food mix with protons in cells to create high-energy nuclei.

I would think that the answer would be "The breakdown of food molecules releases energy to cells."

In our bodies, the enzymes in our digestive system slowly break down the food that we have chewed. In the end, we end up with sugars, fats, and adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the molecule the gives the energy to our body.
