The correct answer is: oxidation of glucose to pyruvate; oxidation of pyruvate; citric acid cycle; oxidative phosphorylation

The steps of cellular respiration (set of metabolic pathways necessary for energy obtaining) are:

    1. Glycolysis-oxidation of glucose into two molecules of pyruvate, with the production of 2 ATP molecules and NADH from NAD+. Occurs in cytosol.

    2. Pyruvate oxidation-produced pyruvates from glycolysis are converted into Acetyl-CoA. Carbon dioxide is released and more NADH produced. Occurs in mitochondrial matrix.

    3. Citric acid cycle or Krebs cycle - The acetyl CoA (made from pyruvate) goes through a cycle of reactions. 2 ATP, NADH, FADH2 and CO2 are released. Occurs in mitochondrial matrix.

    4. Oxidative phosphorylation-Electrons from NADH and FADH2 move down the electron transport chain, protons are pumped out of the matrix, forming a gradient. Gradient of proton is used for the ATP synthesis. 28 ATP molecules are produced
