    In their ionic forms, Na + and Cl-, Cl has 7 valence electrons and Na has 1. According to the octet rule, they will try to get 8 electrons in their valence shell.

    Makes sense for Na (a metal) to give up its one electron to Cl (a nonmetal), so Cl will have 8 electrons in its valence shell! This is what happens during ionic bonding.
