This is true. A tracheostomy is a procedure where an opening is created in the neck into the trachea, otherwise known as the windpipe, and a tube is inserted into the trachea and it allows air to enter into the lungs. This is done on a short term basis or long term, When someone is choking and no other means of alleviating the blockage has been achieved a tracheostomy can be done to allow the person to breathe, the tube is then removed once the blockage has been removed. In addition in the long term when people have diseases that have impaired the ability to breathe effectively on their own a tube is inserted directly into the lungs through the trachea to bring oxygen into the lungs, such diseases include throat cancer.
