    The gametophyte is the phase in the life cycle of the plant where it is in the haploid phase and produces gametes. This phase also develops from a haploid spore. When the gametophyte produces spores, the gametes, in ferns and moss require water (because the spores have flagella to swim). The gametes meet and fuse to form a zygote that develops into the sporophyte phase of the plants. In higher plants, the sporophyte is the dominant phase.
