A lack of resources not only will cause death for some members of a rapidly growing population but will also limit the size of a population. If there are not enough resources to support all of the individuals then the fittest ones will survive and use the resources.

I would say a lack of resources would result in deaths and an overall decrease in population. The birth rate would decrease since there would not be enough resources to even raise babies. Fighting over such resources would also occur allowing the strongest to survive.
