Before a cell can carryout mitosis, it must go through a growth phase of interphase. The cell must have diploid number of chromosomes.

    Explanation:

Mitosis is a type of cell division in which a parent cell divide into two to produce two daughter cells that are genetically identical to the parent cell.

Each daughter cell carry the same number of chromosomes as the parent.

grow its cell contents, double its DNA and synthesize proteins

    Explanation:

Before a cell can carry out mitosis, such cell will need to grow and develop its contents, synthesize (double) DNA, and also synthesize proteins.

Mitosis involves the equational division of non-sex cells to give two daughter cells. Hence, the contents of a cell that wants to divide by mitosis must be enough to be shared by the two daughter cells.

This is why a cell that will divide by mitosis has to go through the G1 phase, the S phase and the G2 phase where the content of the cells grow and develops, DNA of the cell is replicated, and protein is synthesized respectively. All these processes take place during the interpphase stage of the cell cycle.
