As estruturas morfológicas dos vírus HIV tipo 1 e 2 incluem proteínas estruturais e funcionais e um genoma de RNA protegidos pelo envelope viral. O envelope é constituído por uma bicamada lipídica e contém uma proteína complexa conhecida como env. Esta proteína é constituída pelas glicoproteínas gp41, transmembrana e gp120, Na face interior o HIV possui a proteína viral denominada p17 (matriz) e, envolvido por esta proteína, está o capsídeo composto pela p24. Na parte mais interna encontram-se os elementos mais importantes: dois filamentos simples de RNA, a proteína p7 (nucleocapsídeo) e três enzimas essenciais, p51 (transcriptase reversa), p11 (protease) e p31 (integrase). exposta à camada externa do envelope.
