Anton van Leeuwenhoek (1632 - 1723) was a Dutch tradesman and self made scientist. He is best known for the development and improvement of the microscope and also for his subsequent contribution to the field of microbiology. He was the first person to observe and describe single celled organisms which he originally called animalcules now referred to as microorganisms. He was also the first person to record and observe muscle fibers, bacteria, spermatozoa and also blood flow in capillaries.
