A bacterium is unicellular. Unicellular organisms get all their nutrients and water through their cell membrane. Why does this keep any unicellular organisms from growing too large?

if a cell is huge but the cell membrane is relatively small, it just can't keep up. It will have to have active processes, which in turn require more energy and produce more waste. In the end, it's most energy efficient to be small if you're unicellular.
