Dead soft-bodied organisms are usually preserved as carbon films fossils over time, unlike higher organisms that have skeletons. These carbon outlines are formed when the organisms die and are buried in deep and deeper layers of sediment. The pressure and temperatures cause the volatile elements, that make up the organism, such as oxygen and nitrogen to escape leaving behind a more stable carbon skeleton.
