    There are three major respiratory groups of neurons, dorsal respiratory group (medulla oblongata), the ventral respiratory group (medulla oblongata), the pontine respiratory group (in pons and it consists of pneumotaxic centre and the apneustic centre).

    The main roles of the centers are to maintain the rhythm of respiration and response to physiological changes (changes in levels of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and blood pH).
