While swallowing, a large cartilage lying on top of larynx known as epiglottis fall on the opening of the larynx known as glottis thereby closes it off like a lid. The epiglottis fall on glottis when larynx elevates. This prevents food from entering the trachea and hence prevents choking. Epiglottis also restricts liquid from entering the wind pipe along with food.
