Heat cannot transfer energy in vacuum. Only electromagnetic radiation can. Therefore heat transfer processes such as conduction and convection require a medium. By introducing vacuum between the inner and outer walls of thermos flask, heat loss from the content in the flask is drastically reduced because heat cannot transfer through the vacuum to the outer atmosphere.
