Restriction endonucleases are the class of enzymes that are capable of cleaving the long double stranded DNA into fragments. It cleaves the DNA over specific recognition sites. These are used for processes of genetic manipulation such as cloning, DNA fingerprinting and other processes.

Answer: Restriction endonucleases are generally used to cut DNA into smaller fragments. Restriction endonucleases works by shape to shape matching. When restriction endonucleases comes in contact with DNA, it wraps or encloses around the DNA thereby causing a break in the two strands of the DNA molecule. Restriction endonucleases are also known as restriction enzymes.
