Genes and traits relate because genes are what determines which traits you will have.
For example, if your mom has brown eyes with a homozygous phenotype and your dad has blue eyes with a homozygous phenotype then you will have a 100% chance of having brown eyes, which is the genotype, and you will have a heterozygous phenotype for that trait.
