Carrot slices placed in 0.2M salt solution for several hours becomes flaccid (limp). Carrot slices placed in freshwater for several hours becomes turgid (stiff). From this, we can deduce that the

1. freshwater is hypertonic and the salt solution is hypotonic to the cells of the carrot slices.

2. freshwater and salt solution are both hypotonic to the cells of the carrot slices.

3. freshwater is isotonic and the salt solution is hypertonic to the cells of the carrot slices.

4. freshwater is hypotonic and the salt solution is hypertonic to the cells of the carrot slices.

5. freshwater and the salt solution are both hypertonic to the cells of the carrot slices.

4 - Fresh water is hypotonic and the salt solution is hypertonic to the cells of the carrot slices.

    Explanation:

A hypertonic solution contains a higher concentration of solutes. When a cell is placed in a hypertonic solution, the cell contains more concentration of fluid than the hypertonic solution and so fluid moves from the region of higher concentration to the region of lower concentration, in this case, lower concentration being the hypertonic solution. This causes the cell to be flaccid as it has lost some of its fluid content.

A hypotonic solution contains a lower concentration of solutes. When a cell is placed in this kind of solution, the cell contains the higher solute concentration, making fluid move from the hypotonic solution into the cell. The cell becomes enlarged and turgid.

    Answer: Option 4.

The fresh water is hypotonic and the salt solution is Hypertonic.

    Explanation:

Hypotonic solution is a solution that have little dissolved solutes i. e low osmotic pressure compare to other solution. When a cell is put in hypotonic solution, it take in water and the cell swell up and it does not burst due to it's cell wall thereby becoming turgid or hard.

Hypertonic solution is the solution where the concentration of solute is higher outside the cell than inside the cell. Example is saline water. when a cell is placed in Hypertonic solution it will shrinks because it losses water.
