Juan and Melissa were planning to grow some plants for a science experiment. They started with seeds, 100 seeds each. Juan planted his seeds in sandy soil. Melissa planted her seeds in soil that had more clay and less sand. They tracked the seed sprouting, also called germination, in both plots. Juan concluded that seeds germinated best in clay soil, not sandy soil.

Because of its density, clay soil does a good job of holding onto both moisture and nutrients. You can take advantage of the nutrient retention talents of clay soil by using slow-release mineral fertilizers such as rock phosphate and gypsum (calcium sulfate) to build soil fertility.
