Gravitational potential energy (GPE) is the energy that is transferred when an object is lifted into a gravitational field. So when you lift a ball of the ground, energy is transferred as gravitational potential energy. The higher something is from the ground the larger the GPE will be. The equation is:
GPE = mass x height x gravitational field strength (around 9.8 on earth)
