On a transverse segment of the spinal cord, the spinal grey matter is illustrated as being of a butterfly shape. The two prime projections of this grey matter produce the dorsal and ventral horns, and it comprises the lateral horn in between.

The lateral horn of the spinal cord refers to the small lateral projection of grey matter situated in between the ventral and dorsal horn and comprises of neuronal cell bodies of the sympathetic nervous system.
