Many flowering plants coevolve with specific pollinators. The Madagascar orchid has a 12-inch floral tube and is a reliable nectar source for the Hawk moth, which has a correspondingly long proboscis (tongue). Which statement most accurately describes how coevolution might have occurred for the Hawk moth and Madagascar orchid shown here?

    Natural selection would favor orchids with nectar tubes just long enough to for an insect with pollen to make contact. Hawkmoths whose tongue could reach the deep tubes wouldn't be more fit.

    Explanation:

    Natural selection is a process whereby the better fitted or adaptive varieties of species in populations are selected by environmental pressure. This is a never ending process in nature since some environmental factors keeps on changing all the time.

    Just like the the above example, the different proboscis parts are modified for different ways of feeding for both organisms which favours orchids which has nectar tubes which a just long enough for an insect with a pollen to make contact while at the other end, Hawkmoths whose tongues could not reach would not be more fit and at this cause or rate, could easily fade away or evolve.
