The crust comprises two basic types of rocks, that is, granite and basalt. The continental crust is formed mainly of granite, and the oceanic crust comprises volcanic lava rock known as basalt. The continental crust is thicker and the oceanic crust is thinner. The thickness of the crust differs from 5 to 80 kilometers. The temperature of the crust enhances with the depth due to geothermal energy.

The mantle is found between the Earth dense, super-heated core and the crust, in its thin outer layer. The mantle is about 2900 kilometers in thickness and forms a whopping 84 percent of the total volume of the Earth. The two main zones of the mantle are differentiated in the upper mantle, that is, the lowermost segment of the lithosphere comprising of rigid rock of about 50 to 120 kilometers in thickness, and the inner asthenosphere comprising of plastic flowing rock of different thickness, that is, on average of about 200 kilometers in thickness.
