Besides the age of a tree, what additional information can annual rings reveal?

The study of tree growth rings can be very useful, not only to know the age of the specimen, but also to study hydrological phenomena that occurred in the past (for example, floods, droughts). You can also study geomorphological phenomena such as movements or landslides. From the study of these rings you can also study and reconstruct the past and present climate of a particular area.

All this is due to the fact that tree trunk rings are formed because of the seasons, and indicate the tree's growth cycle. In the wet and rainy seasons, just under the bark of the trunk large vessels with thin walls are produced. And in the dry seasons the vessels become smaller and their walls thicken to protect the water, that is, in the wet seasons wide and clear rings occur, in the dry ones they are narrow and dark. This growth pattern is intimately related to the environment surrounding the tree and its alterations throughout the history of the tree.
