The earth is divided into several layers: crust, mantle, and core. Each part has a different job. The crust is the thin, outermost layer that we walk on. It makes up 1 percent of Earth's mass. The mantle is the layer under the crust, it is a little hotter than the first layer and is composed of two sections. This layer can heat up and melt substances. The last layer is the core. This layer is the middle of the earth and the hottest of all the layers. It is split into two parts: the inner core and outer core. Scientist believe that the outer core is liquid and the inner core is solid.
