    The answer would be D. Energy is lost in the form of heat at each stage causing the amount of energy available to decrease at each stage. From the second law of thermodynamics, it is stated that entropy increases with time. As entropy increases the system now is more disordered causing more energy to be lost during a process some converted to work while some to other energy like heat.
