N Stage 1 of his lab, Gunther adds 20 mg of solute into a solution. He stirs it and it completely dissolves. In Stage 2, he adds 20 mg more of solute and stirs, but this time, some settles out. In Stage 3, he then heats his solution, adds 20 mg more, and the solute completely dissolves. Which best explains his experiment?

    This experiment is demonstrating the different types of solutions that may be formed. In stage one, the solution is unsaturated as the solute completely dissolves and none of it precipitates.

    In stage two, the solution is saturated because it holds as much solute as it was possible for it to hold, with no more solute being dissolved.

    In stage three, the solution is supersaturated. The amount of solute that can be dissolved is enchanced by increasing the temperature of the solution.
