The theory of plate tectonics states that the Earth surface is actually plates, these constantly move because of the moving magma below, some collide, some move apart. Some form mountains and volcanoes, and when two plates get stuck, then suddenly release, an earthquake is formed.

The outer layer of the earth is made up of a bunch of individual " plates" or segments and they all move individually
