Plants harness the energy of sunlight to make carbohydrates. This energy is used to break the bonds of water and carbon dioxide molecules and rearrange the atoms to form glucose and expend oxygen. This glucose is used to form the structural elements of the plants and also in providing energy. Therefore, when we consume plants directly we are consuming energy from the sun. Also when we consume meat, the energy of the sun has passed through the secondary consumers who feed on plants.
