When does the cell carry on normal activities such as protein synthesis?

The answer is during the G1 phase of the cell cycle. Cells spend the most time in this phase. It is in this phase that the cells grow considerably following mitosis. Protein synthesis is considerably high in this phase compared to the other phases of the cell cycle. Following G1 phase, the cell may enter S phase or G0 phase.
