    Substances that contributes to alkalinity has good buffering capacity. In natural waters, the substances that provide alkalinity are carbonate, bicarbonate and hydroxide compounds, as well as phosphates and silicates. In normal drinking water, the main substances that act as buffer are carbonate and bicarbonate.
