Schwann and Schleiden made an error about the central feature of the cells because they both agreed that cells could originate from noncellular matter. Some biologists believed that spontaneous generation could occur in the presence of air. that is life could rise from nonliving matter in the presence of air. However French scientist Louis Pastuer performed an experiment to prove that spontaneous generation of life does not occur today. Reasons why it has been concluded that cells cannot rise from noncellular matter include up to today, no known example of increase in mass of cells without cell division and cells are highly complex and no any mechanism has been suggested to be able to create simpler subunits.

Despite being correct about the first two tenets of the cell theory, schleiden and schwann made an error about another central feature of cells. Their main error was that that assumed that cells can arise from non cellular material. Their assumption that the cells can arise from non cellular material was wrong and hence despite being the tenets of the cell theory, they were not able to give a proper theory.
