Parts of continents that are closer to the equator experience higher temperatures because they are physically closer to the sun. Parts of continents that are farther from the equator experience lower temperatures because they are farther from the sun. The earth's distance to the sun directly affects global climate giving us the impression of global warming and cooling. Since the earth does not spin in a perfect circle around the sun, but instead and ellipse, temperatures throughout the decades vary. Temperatures are also directly affected by the sunspot cycle, a phenomenon that occurs roughly every 11 years where the sun waxes on one side and wanes on the other (gets hotter and cooler).
